  • Research Intern

    LOCATION: Nahant Marsh Education Center, 4220 Wapello Ave, Davenport, IA 52802


    REPORTS TO: Research Coordinator


    HOURS OF POSITION: The Intern will work up to 24 hours per week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8:30am-4:30pm for up to 13 weeks during the summer.


    SALARY: $18/hour


    DATE REVISED: December 2025


    START DATE: May 18, 2025


    END DATE: Aug. 13, 2025 (internships may be extended on a case-by-case basis)


    GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:


    Get in the marsh and gain hands-on research experience!


    As a research intern, you will:


    • Live-trap turtles to monitor aquatic turtle populations
    • Perform acoustic surveys for bats and wild birds
    • Monitor nesting activity of Purple Martins
    • Assist with telemetry and GPS-tracking studies of endangered turtles
    • Conduct native prairie vegetation and pollinator surveys
    • Participate in water-quality assessments
    • Capture, handle, and PIT-tag non-venomous snakes
    • Collect and analyze real scientific data
    • Communicate discoveries by creating a scientific research poster
    • Strengthen your skills in reading and writing scientific literature
    • Build professional experience to include on your résumé

    QUALIFICATIONS:


    Applicants must be enrolled at a two-year community college or tribal college, OR enrolled at one of the following four-year institutions:Augustana College, University of Iowa, Upper Iowa University, Iowa State University, University of Northern Iowa, Wartburg College, Doane University, Grinnell College, Luther College, or Nebraska Wesleyan University.


    Students must be pursuing a STEM major (Science Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) and must be U. S. citizens.


    High school seniors who are enrolled in at least one course at a two-year institution are also eligible to apply.


    A minimum college GPA of 2.5 is required.
